Route: The trail provides picturesque views of Hanalei Valley and Bay. It follows a ridge top route established in the days of prohibition, when Okolehao, a Hawaiian liquor was being distilled from the roots of Ki plants, some of which still remain alongside the trail route. Access is from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service parking area off Ohiki Road in Hanalei Valley. The trail travels into Halelea Forest Reserve and ends at a hill called Kaukaopua.
The lower section of this trail is maintained by the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. Sections of the upper trail is maintained by the Sierra Club Kauai Chapter. The Kauai Recreational Trail Map is available for purchase at the Kauai Forestry and Wildlife Office in Lihue for $5.00. You can also obtain a map by mailing a cashier check of money order in United States currency for $7.00 domestic or $9.00 for foreign mailings. The map is a detailed two sided topo at 1:50,000 scale.
