Route: Trail begins along the Waipoli Road at 6400` elevation and proceeds up Haleakala through plantings of mixed pine species. It passes by a natural cave and climbs across the mountain side encountering scrubby vegetation and increasingly rugged terrain. It crosses the land of Kaonoulu to the land of Waiakoa, where it reaches its highest pont at 7,800` elevation, affording excellent views of Coastal and West Maui. The trail then descends via switch backs to join the Waiakoa Loop Trail at 6,000`. There is no water or other facility along this trail. Wear bright colored clothing. Be aware that you may encounter hunters who may be hunting off trail. Stay on trail.
Directions: From Kahului, take Highway 37 past Pukalani to the second junction of Highway 377. Turn Left on 377 for about 0.3 mile, then right on Waipoli Road. The road travels through the first cattle guard and climbs up the mountain through a long series of switchbacks until it enters the forest at 6,400` elevation, where the pavement ends.
Do not use any trail or access road that is not delineated by name and
color and that may also be displayed on these maps. The marked features
are managed for public recreational use. Other trails or roads that branch
off from the public features may be on private property, and are not
managed for any public recreational use. Access is subject to adjacent
landowner approval, and if used without authorization, you will be trespassing
and possibly putting yourself at risk.
