Route: Trail begins Haleakala Ridge Trail. The terrain is rugged and barren with over a dozen cinder cones and craters along the length of the rift. Vegetation is almost nonexistent above the treeline, with the Mamane tree line ending at 8,600` at Kanahau. At this point there is a locked gate and the trail ends. The native scrub is denser and varied at the lower end. Wear bright clothing. Be aware that you may encounter hunters who are hunting off the trail. Stay on trail.
Directions: From Kahului, take Highway 37 past Pukalani to the first junction of Highway 377. Turn left on 377 for 0.3 mile, then right on Waipoli Road. The road travels through the first cattle guard and climbs up the mountain through a long series of switchbacks until it enters the forest at 6,400` elevation. Continue along the 4-wheel drive road until you reach Haleakala Ridge Trail. Road becomes increasingly difficult beyond this point.
Street legal motorcycles and 4WD below locked gate on road only.
