Mamane Trail Map

Route: Take the Upper Waiohuli/Waiakoa trail up about 1/2 mile and to the right from the small volcanic cone (cave shelter) and continue upslope. The upper tailhead is located off the Skyline Trail at approximately 7,300` elevation. Trail passes through mixed native sub-alpine vegetation, including groves of Mamane trees (Sophora chrysophylla) and other native shrubs, before descending into the mixed pines of the Forest Reserve. The trail is a mixed use trail shared by hikers, mountain bikers and hunters. For information on hunting seasons, contact the Hawaii State Division of Forestry & Wildlife, Maui District. Wear bright clothing. Be aware that you may encounter hunters who are hunting off the trail. Stay on trail.

Directions: From Kahului, take Highway 37 past Pukalani to the second junction of Highway 377. Turn left on 377 for about 0.3 mile, then right on Waipoli Road. The road travels through the first cattle guard and climbs up the mountain through a long series of switchbacks until it enters the forest at 6,400` elevation where the pavement ends. The trail is accessible at 0.7 mile along the Upper Waiohuli/Waiakoa Trail from the Waipoli Road.

Hiking boots are not necessary. There is no water or toilets. Camping is not permitted.
